Facilities: Libraries

In addition to the various departmental resource centres, there are two main Libraries within Whitgift School. The Raeburn Library has a working stock of over 25,000 volumes, an extensive multi-media collection and access to the internet, plus a host of online resources.

There is a Head Librarian and two part-time Librarians. The accommodation provides a quiet area for individual study and research, alongside a comprehensive collection of reference works. Additionally the Library has an informal area for viewing BBC News 24 on a plasma screen. Students have access to newspapers, magazines and periodicals to keep up-to-date with current affairs. Amongst the resources available is a wide selection of fiction to encourage a life-long love of reading. The remaining resources support the whole school curriculum and also offer students wider reading material.

Plasma screens are utilised to keep students informed of new accessions, events and changes taking place in the Libraries. Photocopying facilities are also available. The Library offers an exciting programme of competitions for students and activities, some of which are open to parents through the Friends of the Library scheme.

The Lower School Library is manned by two part-time Librarians. It is located on the first floor of the Lower School, is equally well-resourced and caters for students from the ages of 10 to 13. In addition to the main Library area, there is a separate 'Study Room' which offers access to a suite of computers and many other facilities.
