Whitgift took part in Juvenes Translatores, an annual translation contest for 17-year-old students who study within the European Union. The contest is organised by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation, and the five candidates from each school can choose the language into which, and from which, they translate. Out of the UK’s 299 entries, two Whitgift boys received special mention, meaning they were in the top 33 in the country; well done to Jean-Baptiste Rioual (French to English) and Jerry Amokwandoh (Spanish to English). The other Whitgift entrants were Patrick Middleton (German to English), Tom McDonald (Spanish to English) and Grégoire Dubois (French to English) (pictured, from left to right).
Mr Benjamin Morris, Responsible for IB Languages, commented, “The competition provided a real challenge and I hope it will encourage them to keep using their languages. They are all very talented linguists.”
